DBZ Burst Limit Trailer Is Cool

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

I’ve always been a fan of famous manga-ka Akira Toriyama so I find the trailer for Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit to be soothing in a head-busting sort of way.

Write your own joke about something being Over 9000 (bonus points for incorporating your rival’s mother to some degrading degree): ____________________

Microsoft: PGR5 could be driven by Forza dev

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

Filed under: Microsoft Xbox 360, Driving

When Project Gotham Racing dev Bizarre Creations was scooped up by Activision last year, many 360 owners were left wondering what would become of the system’s flagship racing franchise. Speaking to Kikizo, Microsoft Game Studios VP Shane Kim provided one possible (and likely) scenario: put Forza Motorsports 2 team Turn 10 behind the wheel.

Kim says that MS is eager for Turn 10 to branch out and “do more creative execution in the racing space.” (Read: more than just hardcore racing sims.) Kim expressed a desire to take “a fresh creative approach” to a fifth game in the series, and, to that end, proposed imagining “a future where [Turn 10] would develop a new version of Project Gotham Racing.” We humbly suggest that - should they get the gig - Turn 10 replace Kudos with actual MS points.

More of your echochrome levels debut tomorrow

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

Hello again, PlayStation.Blog readers. I’m back with another echochrome extra-level update. Twenty free, new puzzles are making their way to your PS3 over the next two weeks.

echochrome user-created levels 5-22

The first ten will appear beginning tomorrow, and the second set of ten will debut in another week. So if you haven’t played through the last set of free levels – now is the time! And if you haven’t downloaded this crazy perspective puzzle game from the PLAYSTATION Store yet, what are you waiting for?

Once again, the additional levels will appear at random in freeform mode depending on the difficulty level you’ve chosen. The difficulty level is represented by the bars at the bottom right of the loading screen between freeform levels, and the difficulty for the next level can be set while the next level is loading by pressing left or right on the d-pad. Levels are picked randomly from all levels in your “gallery”, “portfolio”, and user created levels. Remember that in freeform mode, levels that have not been cleared are selected first – so if you’re specifically looking for one of these new levels, you may need to skip forward until you find the one you want.

We’ve updated our flickr page with the new layouts, including credit for those who put in the time to make these interesting and complex puzzles. The difficulty level of each puzzle is noted on the flickr page as well. If you’re feeling inspired to create your own echochrome levels, here’s how to do it.

Look for more in the coming weeks!

No Extra Character Slots For WoTLK

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

For all you altaholics out there who maxed out your character slots for your server, WoW-EU CM Vaneras brings bad news concerning Wrath of the Lich King and character slots.

We don’t plan to add another character slot with the introduction of the Death Knight, which means that you would have to either delete or transfer a character, if you wish to roll a Death Knight on a realm that already has 10 characters on it. source

Personally, I don’t have a problem with this but then again I only have 7 slots in my main server filled and I only really play 2-3 of these characters. I really won’t have a problem even if I do decide to play a DK seriously when the expansion comes out. Bit I’ve seen several of my friends who love making alts so much that they’re really pushing the limit of their character slots and they can’t bear to have even one of their toons deleted. I know quite a few people who play two accounts to make room for all their alts (and this gives them the advantage of playing two of their toons side by side, giving them a nice option to run the lowbie alts through dungeons). of course, not everyone has this option.

I understand that adding character slots would probably mean an upgrade in the hardware the servers use but it would really be sweet if Blizzard added even at least one extra slot for the altaholics out there. then again, maybe we all should just follow Vaneras’ suggestions.

Samba de Amigo Wii: first trailer

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

IGN got their paws on a trailer for the new Samba de Amigo Wii game, and, well, it’s Samba de Amigo! On the Wii!

At times like these I think a simple description of the events that transpire within is due:

A family, bored of board games (I know!) have their humdrum afternoon mercifully interrupted when the doorbell rings. They open the door to a magical monkey holding maracas, who then whisks them back to their TV like a good American family where they make complete asses of themselves playing Samba de Amigo with newly confirmed Mii integration.

I know it sounds snarky, but truth be told it’s a pretty accurate depiction of how people looked playing the original on the Dreamcast. I guess it only took us, what, nine years to reach this point again?

Hideo Kojima signing MGS4 at Virgin MegaStore in Times Square June 11

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

Filed under: Culture, Sony PlayStation 3

NeoGAF poster Ephemeris snapped the photo above showing that Metal Gear Solid 4 auteur Hideo Kojima will be at the Virgin MegaStore in Times Square NYC on June 11, signing copies of the game for a midnight launch. We contacted the Virgin MegaStore’s games department this morning just to confirm. The conversation went like this:

“Hi, I just wanted to confirm Hideo Kojima would be signing copies of Metal Gear Solid 4 at the store on June 11?”

“Who?” The clerk sounded half-asleep.

“Hi-de-o Ko-ji-ma, Metal Gear Solid 4, in store June 11?”

“Um, yeah, we’re doin’ that. Sure.”

We’re just curious to see if Kojima does a mega-signing in Japan for the opening there and then bends time backwards (by crossing the date line) to get to New York. That would be hardcore.

SCEA calls the PSP a “Gateway Drug” To Consoles

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

One nice thing about living in Canada is that nobody really uses ridiculous buzz words like “gateway drug.” That leaves me to wonder how Sony intends to market the PSP over here, since SCEA’s Senior Marketing Manager, John Koller, used up his A-list comparisons for the US market.

I always got the impression that North American audiences adopted handheld gaming as a secondary form of entertainment—and that console ownership led to handheld ownership, not vice-versa. Granted, the times are a-changing, but comparing your handheld to drugs might not be the best way to spread awareness.

(Or if you must use the drug metaphor, go for broke and consider: “The PSP is better than horse crack,” or, “better than heroin-fueled sex with Kool-Aid spokeswomen from A&P.̶ ;)

Case: Activision v. Gibson (C.D.Cal.) PENDING

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

After receiving a letter accusing them of patent infringement, Activision filed a declaratory judgment action March 12, 2008, against Gibson Guitars, asking the court for finding of invalidity and noninfringement. Gibson is asserting that it has a patent on a musical performance simulation, which Gibson alleges Activision infringes via its popular Guitar Hero games.

The lawsuit was filed in the Central District of California. The patent is U.S. Pat. No. 5,990,405, entitled “System and Method for Generating and Controlling a Simulated Musical Concert Experience,” issued Nov. 23, 1999. At a glance, the broadest claim appears to be:

13. A system for simulating participation of a user playing a musical instrument in a pre-recorded musical performance having audio and video portions, the musical instrument producing instrument audio signals at an instrument audio output when the instrument is played, comprising:

a. a source playback device for playback of the audio and video portions of the pre-recorded musical performance through corresponding source audio and source video outputs;

b. a source audio control device for controlling one or more characteristics of the audio portion of the pre-recorded musical performance during playback, the source audio control means operably connected to the source audio output and to the instrument audio output and having a controlled audio output; and

c. the source audio control device is responsive to the instrument audio signals whereby at least one characteristic of the audio portion of the pre-recorded musical performance is controlled by playing of the musical instrument by the user.

We’ll keep tracking this case and let you know of any major developments.

10 Year Old Deemed Fat By Wii Fit

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

wiifitboxart.jpg

Yet another video game is being bashed for its negative influence on children and potential long term harm. It’s not GTA IV, it’s not Bully, it’s…Wii Fit.

A 10-year old English girl, is one of the few lucky (or so her parents thought) folks to have the chance to play around with Wii Fit, the exercise-based game recently released Nintendo and next to impossible to get a-hold of. The game regularly assesses your Body Mass Index (BMI), taking into account age, height and weight to provide a numeric measure that falls into a body mass category. Apparently the girl was told by the game that she was “fat”. Her stepfather isn’t happy with the label at all, and suggested that it has already negatively impacted his daughter’s self-esteem and self-image. Now, as a girl just about to enter the topsy-turvy world of prepubescent life, being told by strangers, even virtual ones, that you’re overweight could lead to a whole host of self-confidence issues that extend much beyond the immediate impact. I understand the concern.

Nintendo has completely sidestepped calls by the National Obesity Forum and the girl’s parents to do something about the issue by simply stating that:

“Wii Fit is still capable of measuring the BMI for people aged between two and 20 but the resulting figures may not be entirely accurate for younger age groups due to varying levels of development.”

So unless you’re over 20, you’re kind of playing a guessing game with your own results, which is highly amusing considering that most of the advertising for the game depicts whole families, including young children, enjoying the benefits and having a ball doing so. If it’s inaccurate for those age groups, then Wii Fit becomes less of a measuring tool and more of a straight game…a game which frankly would be awfully boring and pointless with no reward system based on performance improvement.
