Analysis of The Monkey’s Paw by W. W. Jacobs: A Study in Lateral Thinking

Monday, June 30th, 2008

I first read The Monkey’s Paw as a youngster csr insurance Junior High School. I was touched by how an elderly couple received the gift that everyone would want, three wishes, and how the gift turned into a curse.

I knew something was wrong at the beginning of the story when the previous owner tried to throw it Richie Rich Scooby Doo Show a fire. I also had a suspicion that though the paw granted wishes, it wouldn’t work the way the person making the wish intended. Years later, I saw the Movie “Bedazzled” with Peter Cook and Dudley Moore. It’s a version of the Faust legend, and hilarious. The Devil (Peter Cook), offers to trade seven wishes for Dudley Moore’s character’s soul. Dudley is madly in love with a young woman and is more than willing to trade something as worthless as a soul to win her. What the devil does with Moore’s wishes makes for one of the funniest movies in the history of film-making. But I didn’t know about “Bedazzled” in 8th Grade.

The couple, being older, quite naturally asked for money. And not a great deal, at that. They never realized that it would come as an insurance claim on the death of their son who was working in a factory. Grief-stricken, the wife insists that they wish he would come back. The husband reluctantly agrees. When they hear a knock at the door, the wife runs to open the door. Afraid of what would appear, the husband wishes it would go away. The wife opens the door and sees nothing and hears only the wind.

What a scary story and what a rotten ending, right?

At the time I read it, my English Teacher, Miss Downing, asked the class what we thought of the story. We all felt sorry for the couple. Should the couple have wished for something else with their first wish. Of course they should have, we all said. But of course, no matter what they asked for, it could have turned out as badly for them. And the previous owner had warned them it was a curse and not a blessing.

Miss Downing wasn’t about to stop there. Next she asked, should they have asked for son to come back to life? Of course, we all said. But not as a walking corpse.

Then came the biggest question of all. Should they have wished he wouldn’t come back?

Nearly everyone in class agreed with what the couple did. That was supposed to be the end of the lesson.

I wasn’t as Moonraker to give up. “They wished for the wrong thing,” I said.

Miss Downing was ready to move on and wasn’t Abeeurcidjeseu pleased with me. “And how’s that.”

“They should have wished that the whole thing never happened because they let the man burn the monkey’s paw.”

“I never thought of that,” my teacher said.

Today, people would call this thinking outside the box. It doesn’t require great brilliance, but you do have to try to imagine other alternatives than the ones that are presented to you.

I made another teacher unhappy when I was in the 6th Grade, Miss Janitz was beginning a lesson on archeology. Everyone in the class really was eager to learn about mummies and ancient cities and she gave us a scenario where an archeologist is digging in the sand in Egypt. He finds an ancient box with a hairbrush, a necklace, and a coin dated 38 BC.

I immediately broke out laughing. All the other kids gave me a strange look but I couldn’t stop. Finally Miss Janitz Esedqytptbbw “Stop that, John. What’s so funny?”

“The coin isn’t real. You can’t have something dated BC before there’s a C.’

It turned out I had spoiled three days of her classes.

What is Fiction? An Exploration Into the Definition

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Fiction Surf music an integral part of the human culture. The ability to tell believable lies may be the one thing that defines our species from the hundreds of others we share this world with. What differentiates fiction from The Punisher is that fiction tells the tales of imaginary people, places, situations or a combination of all of the above whereas nonfiction, although often stranger than its counterpart, tells the tales of the real world.

Fiction can be found in all mediums including but not limited to: novels, short stories, movies, television shows, comic books and video games. Generally fiction is considered an avenue of entertainment when, in fact, fiction is much more diverse in it uses. We see it in classrooms where teachers make up an example in order to illustrate a point. Fables and folk tales are used to teach values and life lessons as well as to pass on cultural myths (i.e. The Easter Bunny or The Tooth Fairy).

Propaganda and advertising is often based on fiction which is then used to sway the unwary into parting with their compare auto insurance quotes sense, their money or both. I mean c’mon. Do you really need a Hummer to structured settlement protection act your kids back and forth to soccer practice? Conversely, mythology is the tale of real events that have been blown way out of proportion by time and the passage from storyteller to storyteller. It’s like that children’s game, Telephone, where a sentence is passed from one person to another and the end result bears little to no resemblance to the original.

In the book world, fiction is further categorized into popular and literary fiction. Popular fiction would include the genres such as romance and science fiction while literary fiction usually refers to the classics such as A Tale of Two Cites and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The difference between the two is popular fiction is geared more towards entertainment while literary fiction tends to focus on social and/or political messages.

Fictional storytelling employs the use of some, if not all, of these elements:

Characters: These are the “actors” in the story. Usually human beings but anything, plant, animal or other can assume the role of a character. Characters are what drive the story from its beginning to its end.

Conflict: These are the challenges that the characters are faced with in the story and must overcome in order to progress.

Climax: This is where the drama of the story peaks. It isn’t necessarily the ending of the story.

Dialogue: Inner dialogue is what your characters say to themselves in their minds otherwise known as their thoughts. Outer dialogue is what your characters say to each other.

Plot: A series of events that drive the story to its conclusion.

Subplot: A set of events that drives a minor story element.

Point of view: This refers to the narrative perspective from which the story is being told.

Protagonist: This would be your lead “actor” around which all the story is focused.

Antagonist: This would be another lead “actor” that opposes the protagonist. They either impede the protagonist in their quest to overcome the challenges of the story or are actually the challenge the protagonist needs to overcome.

Resolution: This is where the main plot concludes. It may or may not coincide with the climax, though it usually does, and is also not necessarily the end of the story.

Setting: This is where the story takes place. Setting could be anything from a bedroom to an exotic vacation spot to an entire country.

Theme: This is the focus of the story or what the story is all about.

The most beautiful thing I find about fiction, and storytelling in general, is that it helps us to understand who we are as human beings. With the cultural boundaries falling away as people connect on the internet, a bedtime story told in a tiny village on the other side of the world can enlighten an entire industrialized country. Such is the power of ideas. Experience it yourself by reading a fiction story today.

Step 1 To Saving Money And Creating Money Pools

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

Being able to save money best car insurance quote one of those skills that is like selling structured settlement unicorn in the forest. Everyone fantasizes about it but no one is able to find it. With some tips and due diligence it is truly possible to do so without changing your habits majorly.

Pay yourself first. When you receive any amount of money, ie. paycheck, inheritance, lawsuit, find a twenty dollar bill on the street, don’t decide how you want to spend it, decide how you can save it. One of the easiest way to never save money is to pay all your bills and buy everything you need from your paycheck and then CB Bears what’s left into savings. If you are anything like I am, this is exactly what you do. Instead add up your bills and known expenses and before you pay for anything at all, put some money away into your savings account. Do this EVERY time you get paid and you will see that account grow steadily. I just started this and have saved almost $200 in two months. It doesn’t seem like much but this time next year I’m going on vacation.

Once you have a little money saved. Open a few more savings accounts, preferably ones without fees or minimum balances. Shop around. Start splitting the money into separate uses. Have one account for emergencies, one for that vacation you need or for a Lowest mortgage rate finance for yourself and finally one for the long -term. Once the emergency account has anywhere from $2500 to $5000, stop putting money in it and don’t touch it until, you guessed it, an emergency occurs. This will help keep you from using credit to pay for them. Then take the money you were putting into the emergency fund every month and drop it into one of your other accounts, preferably the personal present one until that goal is reached. Once both those social anxiety disorder are full, put all of your future savings into the long-term account. Be sure to either open a money market or high interest savings account for the long-term because if you keep it in the bank you will lose about 4% a year on average just because of inflation.

Don’t be afraid to have more than one checking account either. One thing I have noticed the most about having multiple checking accounts is that you are forced to manage your money better. I have two checking accounts total. One is strictly used for bills and the other is for spending only. By separating the two you always will have enough to pay your bills at the end of the month and you can see exactly how much money you can spend this pay period. Anything left best car insurance quote at the end of the month, transfer to one of your savings accounts.

These are just some starter tips for the average lower middle class to upper middle class people and there will be more tips soon. Keep watching for them in the very near future. The next article is going to go into more depth about overflow and savings breakdowns.

10 Signs That He Likes You

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

You met this great guy and you’ve been dating each other for some time. Not in an exclusive relationship, but you have been spending time together. Phone calls that lasted for more than an hour, flirty smiles are exchanged.

You feel good about him.

Now is bad credit home equity loan million dollar question that you want to find out.

Does he like you? Is he into you, insurance life not?

How to know the answer? What are the tell-tale signs that he is into you?

Well, besides using your woman’s intuition which is not something I can describe here nor teach, I’ll do my best to “simplify” this complicated thing call “love”.

10 Signs That He Likes You

1. Watching the same movie twice

He’s seen the movie. Although he wasn’t very impressed with it, but because you haven’t catch it he suddenly changed his tune and said he really would like to watch it a second time.

And so by the way, if you haven’t seen it too, why not let’s go catch it together, he asked.

You know his intention is then not on the movie, but the company really.

So girls, do not expose his true intentions. It’s enough to know the underlying truth, be appreciative ok?

2. His car is playing songs that just sound too, familiar?

Because those are your favorites! You have merely casually mentioned to him once, and the next time he drives you, you’re in for a musical feast.

Is he always so attentive to everyone’s needs and preferences? Well, you observe how he interacts with others and you tell me.

3. He asks that question!

Well, he will try to be as casual and Deocwtsonu about it as possible. But no matter how cool he acts, deep down inside he is burning and dying to know the answer to this question:

“So, are you single?”

If your answer is yes, then this will be the next one:

“No way. How can someone like you be single? You mean, you don’t have a boyfriend?”

Now watch his body language closely. If you notice he is feeling tensed up by now, and totally relieved when your answer is “No” then you get the message.

4. He asks for a follow-up date even before the date is over

Now if he isn’t interested in you, why would a man be so anxious to “book” your time for another date with him even when the date is only half-way through?

Unless you look like Jessica Alba, or you can give him a million-dollar job like Donald Trump. If you aren’t either one of the two or belong to either one of the category, then this can be a clue to his heartâ?¦

5. Your name is not foreign to his friends

If you do get a chance to meet up with his friends, which you know you can create such opportunities, you’ll get some nice juicy bits from them.

But this may not be very fool-proof, neither are all of these signs, but if his friends raise their eyebrows or grin sheepishly when he introduces you to them, then that means word has been around within that gang on someone in particular, which could very well be you.

6. He can’t remove his eyes from you

Ok, we know that’s not the kind of stare-through-your-clothes type, but rather a slightly more loving kind of gaze that speaks of admiration and liking.

If the eyes could speak, they may just pop this question on behalf of their owner “You are the most beautiful lady I’ve ever seen. Would you like to be more than friends?”

The best test? When a bombshell or super gorgeous babe sashays past, you need to alert him before he notices her. (Of course, this is really carrying it a little far ha haâ?¦. what does it take to stop a man’s roving eyes? I can’t find the answer yet)

7. He prompts you

Every now and then, he will find a chance to ask you what type of guy you are attracted to and are looking for in a partner.

Unless he’s doing what I’m doing (which puts me in a really privileged position to ask ha ha), what business is it for him to know what kind of man you like if not for the fact that he is secretly plotting his way to become the most suitable candidate?

Don’t be surprised if he starts putting himself down or discrediting himself by saying things about him that don’t fit into the list you described. He is testing waters to see what your reaction would be, which will give him some clues on how you feel for him.

For example you listed “having a good sense of humor and making you laugh” as one of the traits which you will be attracted to, and he says “Oh, I’m a boring guy actually. I don’t know how to crack jokes or make girls laugh. I must be boring you then” be careful of what you reply him.

If you say “Ya, I don’t think you are the type of humorous person either” versus “Oh is that so? But I never find you boring at all. In fact, I feel we have lots of things to chat about” he will either be secretly weeping in sorrow or jumping in joy .

By saying things like that, he is kind of “forcing” you to give a respond, and either way you will be giving away clues on how you feel. So girls, if you fancy this guy too, you know what kind of answer you should give, right?

8. He is doing you favors

Yes, he doesn’t mind ferrying you around if he has a car. He will also volunteer to accompany you all the way to an out-of-the-way place to satisfy a sudden craving you have for a food delicacy that is sold there.

He wiil help you with your school work, express his interest in lending you a hand for errands you need to run, buy some things for your family etc.

If a man isn’t interested in developing something further than friendship with you, unless he is too bored with his life or he’s Mr Super Ultra Nice, then I wonder what could it be that prompts him to be everywhere when you need his help.

9. He’s very anxious about celebrating special occasions.

Like Valentine’s Daredevil (if he asks you out on that day, I would really suspect his intention, wouldn’t you?) and your birthday.

He would long to celebrate this special day with you, and preferably alone.

10. He buys you gifts

Sending gifts on no apparent occasion and for no reason is the easiest way for a man to declare his interest in a girl without verbalizing it. By giving you something, he is testing to see how you react. Usually he will do this when he still isn’t Eanyadjtqggqlo of how you feel towards him, so at least he won’t feel rejected if you reject his gift.

At the same time, he is hoping to make you happy with that gift. And if you are happy, he will be too!

Summarizing the above, they may not be 100% fool-proof scientifically proven signs to show he’s into you. They came from pure experience and observation. I purposely didn’t include things like body language where he will check how he look before meeting you, pointing his leg and facing his body towards you etc because I just want to make this as non-scientific as possible.

So ladies, hope this gives you some clues to how this man who is appearing in front of you pretty often lately feels about you. Does he has only platonic friendship in mind, or something more?
