The last weekend of September saw quiksilver syncro 1mm ls neo top return of the monster trucks to Brisbane International Speedway. To help kick off a brand new speedway season, two of the trucks were on hand to ensure none of the cars stranded in-field, left in the same physical state.
The trucks featured on the night were Aussie Predator and Bear Foot 1. Both these trucks had salomon mens falcon 10 ski boot done their chores at the speedway back in early May, however this night in particular would be slightly different, since both these trucks were now under the new management of Robert Stevenson from ACE Fireworks. Furthermore, one truck in particular would make its Brisbane Speedway debut under a new guise, Bear Foot 1. This truck, since arriving in Australia, has always worn the Bear Foot brand name, however it wasn’t too long until the owners decided the tired old image of past, was due for a transformation.
Seeing monster trucks as part of a full speedway program is not an unusual event on the Australian circuit, and with the new owner being a speedway fanatic himself, a cross over of ideas was a likely factor in the design of the new body. Utilising a Ford replica fibreglass shell, off a speedway Super Sedan race car, it was modified to suit the monster truck chassis comfortably and given an entirely new graphics scheme. The result was called Bear Foot 1 - a truck that is certainly unique, as with most other Australian monster trucks, going beyond the common clones which are typical of some industries overseas.
What makes the monster trucks so special at Brisbane Speedway meetings is the legion of fans that follow. Be it speedway fans, monster truck fans or just the plain curious, all can mingle together in a family friendly atmosphere to watch all sorts of mechanical based mayhem and competition. The crowd could miss none of the action, especially with the Brisbane debut of V8 Sprintcars bearing bigger bore engines as the result of recent rule changes. Not only was the racing fast an furious, some of the drivers felt the fury too. By the end of the night it was literally fisticuffs, as two finals competitors let themselves have at it after a controversial finish. The monster trucks seemed almost placid compared to the Sprintcar action, but the crowd were transfixed nonetheless. Piloting the Aussie Predator was Ken Dorman alongside the almost inseparable pair of Sherri Schaffer and Bear Foot 1.
The trucks would make three appearances throughout the night. The first round would be introductions followed by a crush over. It was here, Aussie Predator showed signs of not performing completely up to scratch. Right from the first crush over, the motor showed signs of struggling to find the horsepower necessary to pull the truck up and over the cars. Dorman compensated for this by securing a faster run up to the cars, resulting in more distance jumps than sky wheelies, but nevertheless still a crowd pleaser.
The second round would see the trucks get down to business, in a competition for the best of three sky wheelies. It became immediately obvious that Schaffer was no spring chicken to this sort of contest. Each time Schaffer performs at Brisbane Speedway, she brings with her some new found or finely tuned driver skill, which guarantees that every performance is more extraordinary than the previous. The truck played a huge role also, since all the horsepower was on tap and performing flawlessly all night long.
The final round was dedicated to the now traditional monster truck train and freestyle. Dorman was mighty keen in the Aussie Predator, tailgating Bear Foot 1 within a few feet most of the time. It was fortunate that the Predator made it up to the final round, however that wouldn’t last for too long since, on what would be its final jump, the driveline would lay waste to itself in a shower of sparks, ending Dorman’s night. Bear Foot 1 went on to complete freestyle, ending the show in spectacular fashion, managing to pull off a donut in the dusty, dry conditions.
This show was, without doubt, a success. Realising the growing popularity of these sorts of events, Brisbane International Speedway has booked two more monster truck shows before the end of the season, with the possibility pending of adding another show to the line up… AMT is certainly not complaining about those odds!
